Verizon’s CTO Says 6G Needs an Uplink Answer That Incremental Work Cannot Give

Cellular network antenna mounts on a rooftop installation

Verizon’s chief technology officer, Yago Tenorio, told the RCR Wireless 6G Forum that the industry is missing a breakthrough on uplink capacity, the direction of traffic that AI applications are expected to load hardest. Mobile networks are built around fast downloads: a typical design splits capacity between downlink and uplink at ratios of 9 to 1 or 8 to 2, on the assumption that devices pull far more than they push.

Tenorio expects that assumption to break. Continuous contextual awareness, where a device streams sensing, video or audio to an AI agent in the cloud or at the network edge, would push the ratio toward parity and possibly past it.

The devices make it harder. AI wearables such as smart glasses are constrained by size, power draw, heat and the number of antennas that will fit in a frame, so uplink capacity has to grow while the client gets weaker.

Sub-band full duplex is one technique Tenorio names. Decoupling uplink and downlink from shared bands is the more structural idea, and Ericsson’s Akhil Gokul has described it as giving each direction its own lane, with midband spectrum carrying downloads and lowband carrying uploads. T-Mobile is studying the same ground and has raised the option of unlicensed spectrum for fixed uplink.

Spectrum work is already running ahead of the standard. Verizon has filed with the FCC to trial 6G use cases in the 4 GHz band, while AT&T bought EchoStar’s 600 MHz lowband holdings partly for uplink headroom and intends to deploy Ericsson dual-band 600 MHz radios with eight receive chains, a first for lowband spectrum. Signals Research Group separately measured Verizon’s 5G standalone network running Ericsson 32T32R massive MIMO radios and reported a clear uplink gain.

T-Mobile has been adding uplink features to its 5G-Advanced network, among them uplink carrier aggregation, uplink MIMO and transmit switching.

Verizon expanded its 6G Innovation Forum with nine new members last month and is trialling integrated sensing and communication alongside AI wearables to pin down requirements. Tenorio put the window for shaping the standard at two years.

Supply note: Uplink-focused upgrades are showing up in our order book as radio and filter work, with new site builds adding little to the mix. Massive MIMO remote radio unit chassis rated at 32T32R and 64T64R are held in stock in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, with in-stock units ready to ship in two to four working days and factory-allocation items quoted at four to eight weeks lead time. Where a specific band variant is scarce, cross-reference equivalents with matched power ratings and connector types are offered, and each unit is bench-tested for output power and VSWR before dispatch. The field pattern our carrier customers report is that tower-top power supply modules and cooling fan trays fail far more often than the radio chain itself, so those spares are quoted alongside any chassis order. Buyers include carriers densifying uplink, tower contractors and systems integrators retrofitting existing sites, typically in mixed pallets covering 10 to 50 sectors.
