Huawei Advances Mobile AI with Antenna Innovation and Smarter Networks

The headline piece is VitaAAU, a 256T256R active antenna unit that Huawei says delivers 30 percent wider coverage than a 1024-element antenna and peak downlink above 10 Gbps. RetinaMIMO, the beamforming algorithm behind it, is already running commercially in the UAE. Eric Zhao, vice president and chief marketing officer of Huawei Wireless, presented the portfolio.
The coverage claim is the part operators will test first. A 30 percent wider cell footprint on the same site count changes the economics of rural and suburban builds, where adding towers is the expensive part. The UAE deployment gives the claim a live reference point, although Huawei has not published independent drive-test data alongside the announcement.
Energy is the second pillar. The GigaGreen Plus series is rated for a 30 percent energy reduction versus the previous generation, and OSCAR, Huawei’s AI power controller, is quoted at 20 times the calculation efficiency and 40 percent power reduction, with commercialization targeted for the first half of 2027. The UBBPi series rounds out the transport side of the pitch. For an operator running tens of thousands of sites, a 30 percent radio energy cut is a larger line item than a coverage gain.
The third-party data point comes from China Telecom Shanghai, which has deployed 6,500 5G-A sites covering 96 percent of the city’s main urban area. That figure is an operator deployment statistic. It is not a Huawei marketing claim. Huawei also announced an OpenAN project with China Mobile, which is the software counterpart to the hardware announcements. GSMA data shows 5G-A reaching 12 percent of global connections by 2030, which frames the scale of this deployment.
OSCAR lands in H1 2027. Most energy gains depend on scale. Buyers purchase on roadmap. Shipped product is not yet available. The 10 Gbps figure is a peak. It is not a cell-average.
Supplier’s note: Our warehouse currently holds Huawei antenna units and baseband modules with 6 to 10 week lead times for standard configurations, and we can cross-reference equivalent radio hardware from ZTE and Ericsson for operators running mixed-vendor networks. Field installation teams on our roster have commissioned Huawei 5G-A sites in urban environments, handling rack mounting, fiber termination, and antenna alignment, with typical on-site duration of 3 to 5 days per site. Inventory levels for high-band antenna units are tighter than low-band stock, so buyers planning Q1 2027 deployments should reserve early; freight and customs for Southeast Asian destinations add roughly 2 weeks beyond factory lead time, and minimum order quantities apply on antenna-only purchases. Stock checks and allocation confirmations are available on request for qualified buyers.
