Carrier Ethernet Switches: What “Carrier” Adds Over Enterprise Access
A carrier Ethernet switch looks like an enterprise access switch in a photograph. The difference is in what it is expected to survive and what it must do when a link fails — and it is this difference that decides whether the box belongs in an outdoor cabinet on a ring, or in a comfortable comms room.
What the “carrier” label actually means
- Service definitions, not just VLANs. Carrier Ethernet is specified as services (point-to-point E-Line, multipoint E-LAN) with defined delivery guarantees, rather than as best-effort switching.
- OAM built in. Link and service fault management and performance monitoring run continuously so an operator can see a degraded span before a customer calls.
- Sub-50 ms ring protection. Traffic is designed to survive a fibre cut on a protected ring without a visible outage — the reason these platforms sit in aggregation rather than at the edge of a building.
- Environmental and power reality. Extended temperature range and DC power are normal; fans and AC-only supplies are not.
- Timing. Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 are used to carry timing to radio sites, which is why the same platforms appear in mobile backhaul.
Checking a switch before you buy it second-hand
- Software licence level. On several platforms carrier features are licensed, not bundled. A switch with the right ports and the wrong licence is the wrong switch.
- Port composition. Count the SFP cages you need against the copper ports you will actually use; a 48-port copper switch with two cages may not aggregate the way the diagram assumed.
- Power supply type and redundancy. AC versus DC, single versus dual, and whether the PSUs are included.
- Stacking and uplink capability if the topology depends on it.
- Consumables. Fans and PSUs are the parts that fail first; check they are available for the model before committing to a quantity.
We quote carrier access and aggregation switches with their exact port configuration, PSU type and licence state stated up front, and we confirm against the manufacturer datasheet for the revision you receive.
